I love owls. They make me laugh. What makes me laugh about these burrowing owls is that they stand on the ground like this, popping up from the greenery in broad daylight! However, there is a troubling side to their story. These owls are in trouble, at least here in South Florida, with no habitat left. As populations dwindle, they may be experiencing a genetic depression and show this with more owls exhibiting recessive colored eyes, like straw, speckled, brown and black, instead of the intense yellow eyes we expect.
This painting portrays the genetic differences in their eyes. Resource photo by Ernest Leupin.
